Rowallan Castle stands fully intact on a small knoll beside the Carmel Water in East Ayrshire, where the southern front dates to 1562 and the site may have marked the birthplace of Elizabeth Mure. The Mure, Boyle, Campbell and Corbett families held the place across centuries before Niall Campbell bought it back in 1989. A carved moor’s head near the family arms still mocks the Mure name, turning stone into a joke that has survived longer than most human vanity.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Rowallan Castle as Enclosure (period Unassigned), Cinerary Urn (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Rowallan Castle was built by the Douglas family in the 13th century and later held by the Earls of Morton. It is important as a historic Scottish castle associated with significant noble families and as a site of historical and architectural interest.
