Cessnock Castle is a medieval tower house just outside Galston, built by John Campbell of Loudoun in the late 13th century and altered after 1578. Mary Queen of Scots visited after her defeat at Langside, and the site later passed through Campbell, Portland and de Fresnes hands before becoming private residential use. Its circular stair-tower and octagonal tower still rise from the Galston edge like a remembered argument about who owns time.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Cessnock Castle as Castle (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Cessnock Castle was built in the late 13th or early 14th century by the Maxwell family, a powerful Scottish noble clan. It is remembered for its strategic importance in the border region between Scotland and England, and for its role in the conflicts of the Wars of Scottish Independence.
