Kilmaurs Tower rose in the fourteenth century as a strong stone seat for Clan Cunningham before the ninth Earl of Glencairn abandoned an immense new mansion beside it. The unfinished walls still cling to the older tower like a ghost trapped inside a living body, exposing the moment ambition collapsed under debt and death. That sudden stop preserved the medieval bones beneath the grand pretence, forcing later visitors to read the interruption rather than admire the result.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Kilmaurs Tower as Tower House (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Kilmaurs Tower was built by the Cunningham family in the late 15th or early 16th century. It is important as a well-preserved example of a Scottish tower house and as the family seat that later became associated with the Earls of Glencairn.
