Earthwork in Davros

Earthwork

What is recorded here

In lowlying, damp pasture; good views. The 1915 OS 6-inch map shows an arc (diam. c. 20m) of hachuring curving S−NE, possibly the W half of an originally circular enclosure, with a linear rock feature extending for 65m to W from its S end; it is not shown on earlier map editions. At ground level there is no visible trace of any feature corresponding to the hachured arc. The E−W linear rock feature consists of a raised seam/ridge of limestone bedrock, with evidence of extensive past quarrying along its length resulting in very uneven ground, mounds and hollows and exposed vertical and horizontal planes of limestone. Remnants of a field boundary –part earthen, part stone walling – extends E−W along the top of the bedrock seam. Traces of at least three perpendicular field boundaries extend to S from this.
