This blue commemorative plaque records: Richard III, as Duke of Gloucester and later King of England, was Lord of Barnard Castle from c.1474 until his death in 1485. He made improvements to the castle, took a close interest in the town and was a great benefactor of its church. Recorded plaque organisation: Barnard Castle Town Council.
Richard III, the last Yorkist king of England, reigned from 1483 to 1485 and is remembered for his brief rule, controversial claims to the throne, and his defeat at the Battle of Bosworth Field which marked the end of the Plantagenet dynasty and the beginning of the Tudor era.
