This blue commemorative plaque records: The Georgian North Dock Designed by eminent engineer William Chapman for the 3rd Marquis of Londonderry for the shipping of coal. The foundation stone laid on 28th November 1828 marked the beginning of the town of Seaham harbour. Recorded plaque organisation: Seaham Heritage Association.
The Georgian North Dock, designed by prominent engineer William Chapman, was pivotal in developing Seaham Harbour as a major coal-exporting port, significantly contributing to the industrial growth and economic development of County Durham in the early 19th century.
