Freestanding cast-iron water hydrant, installed c.1880, having fluted shaft and cap with moulded base, neck and spout. Later tap added. Now disused.

This water hydrant displays artistic detailing in its design, with the fluted shaft and cap enlivening an otherwise functional object. Water hydrants such as this performed an important social and functional role in nineteenth and twentieth century Ireland, providing an easily accessible communal water source.
