Staplegordon

Tower House (medieval)

What is recorded here

Staplegordon was a medieval tower house in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, where a steep mound still hides fragments of masonry above the River Esk. The village has mostly vanished, leaving only a kirkyard and scattered outbuildings to mark a place once busy with life. Johnnie Armstrong may have stood inside that tower before James V took his life in 1530, turning a border estate into a warning about the reach of royal power.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Staplegordon as Tower House (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1km. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
