Comlongon Castle is a red sandstone tower house built in the later 15th or early 16th century for the Murrays of Cockpool, standing 18 metres high on a stone plinth above a marshy site near Clarencefield. Its thick walls, original iron yett, vaulted cellar and carved hall show a family that had wealth enough to decorate a private stronghold, yet the castle also became a children’s home, a hotel and a place whose future kept changing. It is not merely a ruined box of stone; it is a life lived in layers, from Murray pride to other people’s laughter, loss and reinvention.

Comlongon Castle was built by the Maxwell family in the 15th or 16th century and is remembered as a historic tower house associated with the powerful Scottish Borders lords. It is important as an example of late medieval defensive architecture in southern Scotland.
