Torthorwald Castle stands as a ruined rectangular tower in Dumfries and Galloway, marking a site where human ambition kept returning after loss. Its oldest visible stone dates to the 14th century, yet the place may reach further back through an earlier earthwork. Kings, clans and relatives took it from one another, and in 1544 Michael Lord Carlyle sacked it during a family feud. Even after its roof was removed in the 18th century and part of it collapsed in 1993, the vaulted hall and turnpike stair still suggest a house that resisted forgetting.

Torthorwald Castle was built by the de Torthorwald family in the 13th century and later held by the Keiths, a prominent Scottish noble family. It is remembered for its strategic importance in the defense of the Scottish border region during the medieval period.
