Torthorwald Castle stands as a ruined rectangular tower in the heart of its village, carrying stone layers from the fourteenth century above older earthworks. The building has absorbed betrayal, confiscation and family violence, including a sixteenth-century raid that stripped it for a woman’s reinstatement. Its vaulted basement and turnpike stair still force a visitor upward through that much history, while the lost roof exposes the chambers to rain and memory.
