Morton Castle is a ruined hall-house from the 1300s, hidden on a steep road above Dumfries and Galloway. Unknown hands built its back-to-back gates, perhaps learning English masonry near Newcastle, before Douglas lords lived inside and James IV burned it during his campaign against the Earl of Morton. The castle stopped being a home around 1714, but its stones still stand beside Morton Loch, offering a clear view of the Lowther Hills and a reminder that remote fortresses often leave more behind than they protect.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Morton Castle as Standing Stone (prehistoric). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
