Comlongon Castle

Spearhead (bronze)(period Unassigned)

What is recorded here

Comlongon Castle is a red sandstone tower built around 1500 for the Murrays of Cockpool, standing on a stone plinth above marshy ground in Dumfries and Galloway. Its thick walls, vaulted cellar and carved hall show a family proud enough to display the Royal Arms of Scotland beside a ceremonial aumbry. The Murrays kept it until 1984, then it became a children's home, a hotel and a wedding venue before falling into administration in 2019.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Comlongon Castle as Spearhead (bronze)(period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1km. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
