Castle Knowe rises beside the Kilruskin Toll Road as a rounded mound that may have watched traffic from the Iron Age through the Medieval period. People have argued whether it was a castle hill, a burial place or a justice mound beneath an oak, while farmers took stones and soil for other uses. The road still passes close enough for the knowe to feel like a guard post, even when its true purpose remains disputed.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Castle Knowe as Settlement (iron Age). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
