Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Lochnaw as Ogham Inscribed Stone (early Medieval)(possible). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1km. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Likely dating to the early Medieval period, the Lochnaw ogham inscribed stone may have served as a boundary marker, memorial, or personal inscription. Ogham stones are often associated with early Celtic speech communities and may reflect local land use, lineage, or religious practices.
