Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Windy Edge as Long Cairn (neolithic). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Neolithic long cairn; dates to the early to middle Neolithic period (c. 3700–2500 BCE). It represents a type of communal burial monument significant for understanding prehistoric funerary practices and social organization in northern Britain.
