Castledykes is an unregistered hammer of stone, a small marker dropped into the wide Dumfries landscape without a date, owner or explanation. That absence is not a failure; it is the shape of the place. Around it lie older wounds and larger structures, a cursus, stone circle, castle and Roman fort, yet this lone hammer remains the clearest point named. It may have marked a boundary, a bargain, a burial or a battle line, but no record has preserved the hand that set it or the event it pointed to.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Dumfries, Castledykes as Hammer (stone)(period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
