Castle Knowe rises beside the old Kilruskin road as a broad mound that may have watched travellers pass or hosted local justice beneath its east-side oak. People have called it a castle hill, fortlet or burial place, while ploughs and stone-robbers gradually renamed its edges. The mound still stands near West Kilbride, carrying several memories at once and refusing to give any one of them the last word.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Castle Knowe as Fort (prehistoric)(possible). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
