Castledykes remains a name without a master, marked only as a battleaxe on stone that formed before human memory. Two armies clashed there, but no chronicle preserved which side bled or which flag fell, leaving the ground to keep its own verdict. Beneath the grass lies Early Permian sandstone, old enough to have watched empires dissolve, yet silent about the men who broke upon it.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Dumfries, Castledykes as Battleaxe (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
