Castle Douglas is a grid-planned market town in Galloway, founded in 1792 by William Douglas beside Carlingwark Loch. Its streets copy the rational layout of Edinburgh’s New Town, but the water beside them has given up bronze tools, pony gear and older submerged life. The town is young enough to have been invented by one man and old enough to keep losing things back to myth.
