Castlewigg stands in Dumfries and Galloway as a derelict C16 tower house built for the Agnews, later expanded by the Dunbars into a C18 mansion. Its ruined walls still hold the shape of two great families and the violence or vanity that drove them to build so high. The castle has lost its roof, its rooms and perhaps its name in common speech, but it keeps the local landscape honest by refusing to disappear.
