Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Coats Hill as Cairnfield (prehistoric) - (post Medieval), Rig and Furrow (medieval) - (post Medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

A prehistoric cairnfield, likely dating to the Neolithic or Early Bronze Age, associated with agricultural terraces from the medieval period. Its significance lies in illustrating long-term land use and ritual activity in the landscape.
