What is recorded here

Castlehill in Dumfries and Galloway is a prehistoric burnt mound, meaning people repeatedly heated stones and dumped the scarred debris in one place. That much is clear. Whether they cooked food, prepared bark, ritually destroyed something or simply learned the behaviour of hot rock and cold water is no longer recoverable. The mound keeps the result while withholding the reason.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Castlehill as Burnt Mound (prehistoric). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
