Castle Douglas is a planned market town in Dumfries and Galloway, founded in 1792 by William Douglas beside Carlingwark Loch. Its grid streets echo Edinburgh’s New Town, while Cotton Street still recalls the hand-woven cotton factories created there. The area holds older layers, including Roman cavalry forts at Glenlochar and a Bronze Age cauldron recovered from the loch, suggesting the water has long received both human ambition and forgotten offerings.
