Field boundary in Dromroe (glanarought By.)

Field boundary

What is recorded here

Half a metre of wall still stands in the shallow bog, marking a boundary now lost to the cutaway landscape. It runs north for forty-five metres before sinking into deeper water, while a small cairn guards the southern end. The stones may have separated household fields or bounded common ground, but the bog has taken the names and numbers from the story. What remains is a line in the earth, waiting for someone to walk it and remember that people once lived beside the Dromoghty River.
In mainly cutaway bog, on an E-facing slope overlooking the valley of the Dromoghty River. The remains of a curvilinear field wall (T 0.8m; H 0.5m) protrude intermittently above the surface of shallow uncut bog and run in a general N direction for c. 45m. The wall decreases in height (H 0.2m) towards the N end and then runs on into deeper bog. There is a cairn (KE101-082005-) near the S end of the wall. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 30 May 2011
