What is recorded here

On N and E side of rectangular fair green, c. 200m SE of Dromagh mining complex (15252). Ranges of 2-storey buildings; each house 3 bays wide. Not all houses are now occupied and a number have been demolished. Over 40 colliers and 300 labourers were employed daily at the colliery (Bowman 1934, 326), most of whom lived in Dromagh. According to Bowman (ibid.), settlement had two shops and two public houses in 1841. Four fairs were held here annually, but discontinued about 1883 (Ó Muimhneacháin 1984, 72). Untarred road, which passes through fair green, is indicated on 1842 OS 6-inch map; it extends W to Dromahoe Bridge (now collapsed). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
