Rath Packing Company in Waterloo, Iowa, grew from a hog butcher into the nation's largest meatpacking facility by 1941, surviving two world wars and depressions with profits in most years. The 1948 strike turned violent, killing a union member, overturning cars, and forcing National Guard troops into the streets. When workers took control in 1980, they inherited a dated four-story plant and a shrinking pork market, and Rath closed in 1985.
