Drop Redoubt is a pentagonal brick fort built between 1804 and 1815 on the Western Heights of Dover to direct flanking fire onto invasion forces approaching the town and port from the west. It replaced an earlier irregular fieldwork, gained eastern and western spurs during 1860s remodelling, and carried heavy guns, including 24 pounders and later 7 inch breech-loaders, while bomb-proof barracks could hold two hundred men. The fort saw use again in the Second World War before abandonment, leaving its rampart, ditch, caponiers and cliff-edge views as a stark reminder of Dover’s repeated fear of landing troops.
