Sandsfoot Castle is a roofless Tudor fort built around 1541 to guard the Weymouth anchorage. Bastion earthworks appeared around 1623, the castle was abandoned in 1644-5, and it remained a storehouse until at least 1691. The sea took the gunroom and broke part of the fort onto the foreshore, while the old defences became public gardens. What remains is a lean stone ribbon beside the water, still holding the shape of a weapon that the coast forgot to aim.

Sandsfoot Castle was built in the early 16th century by the Arundell family of Cornworthy, likely as a coastal defense and family stronghold. It is remembered for its strategic location on the Lyme Bay coast and as an example of early Tudor military architecture in Devon.
