Lulworth Castle is a Jacobean mock fortress built between 1588 and 1609 for Thomas Howard, 3rd Viscount Howard of Bindon, preserving one of only five surviving Elizabethan or Jacobean houses of that defiant style. Wealthy Dorset owners kept remodelling the stone lodge because pride, not necessity, drove them to outdo neighbouring landowners. That competitive spirit still occupies the rooms, turning a private hunting retreat into a visible challenge against time and ordinary taste.

The National Heritage List for England records Lulworth Castle as a registered park or garden at Grade II. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
