South Base Tower is a monument in County Derry, Ireland. Perhaps it marked the southern anchor for a line stretched across water, letting surveyors capture the shape of Ireland with nothing but light and angle. Maybe the tower still stands where that first measurement began, a small stone witness to the moment a whole country became math.
