William George Aston

William George Aston was born in County Derry in 1841, a young Irishman who crossed the world to teach Europe the hidden shapes of Japanese thought. He mastered the verb, translated ancient chronicles, and built the first Western bridges into a culture that guarded its own history. Aston died in Devon in 1911, leaving behind ten thousand rare volumes that still anchor Cambridge’s Japanese collection. The boy from Derry did not merely study Japan; he forced the west to listen.
