Willersley Castle rose from a levelled rock in 1786 to show that Arkwright had conquered nature itself. Critics called the result inconvenient ill taste, but the building stood tall above the Derwent until fire, death and time changed its purpose. It became a retreat, a maternity hospital, a hotel and finally a holiday centre, proving that human ambition keeps inhabiting stone long after the first dream fades.

The National Heritage List for England records Willersley Castle as a registered park or garden at Grade II. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
