Castle Ring defended settlement

Castle Ring is a rare half-hectare defended settlement on Harthill Moor, preserved since the seventh to fifth centuries BC when small family groups lived inside its earthen bank and ditch. The missing rampart on the south side marks the likely entrance, while round houses and perhaps winter livestock filled the space behind the surviving earthworks. It remains an unusually complete example of a northern upland farmstead, set among burial mounds and the Nine Stones Close stone circle.
