Edward I’s men imposed a rigid English grid on the Welsh moors, building a triangle of octagonal towers that still mocks the uneven land. The result was a cage rather than a home, forcing the living town to spill outside its own walls. That is the castle’s true shape: a proud mathematical instrument for controlling people, later broken by the very hands it was built to deny.
