Roger de Conyers built Bishopton Castle in 1143 with two baileys and a surrounding artificial lake, forcing visitors to cross narrow causeways while he defended his choice in a bitter bishopric dispute. The mound still rises in fields south of the village, preserving the shape of that proud, dangerous decision. Later the Bishop of Durham claimed the castle, turning a private weapon into regional power.
