Egremont Castle rose on a mound above the River Ehen after William II conquered Cumberland in 1092, but William Meschin rebuilt it between 1120 and 1135 to protect the new town. Traders paid tolls for security in the long marketplace street, while the castle watched over them like a stone guardian. Legend claims a hidden horn waits for the rightful heir, a thought bright enough to carry the ruin forward into imagination.

Egremont Castle was built by the de Montagu family in the 13th century and later held by the Dacre family. It is important as a well-preserved example of a medieval fortified manor and for its historical association with the Border Reivers.
