Grave Yard in County Monaghan is an oval burial ground on a south-facing slope where a round tower stands inside the western wall and a stone shrine marks the southern edge. Headstones date from the early 1700s to about 1900, suggesting continuous use across centuries. The original church of St Tigearnach and perhaps an Augustinian abbey may have stood within or beside this same ground, meaning people have kept returning to this exact patch of earth long after those buildings disappeared.

Situated towards the bottom of a S-facing slope. The original church of St Tigearnach (MO011-010001-) and perhaps other structures like the cloister and church of the Augustinian abbey of Ss Peter and Paul might have been located in the graveyard that incorporates the round tower (MO011-010002-) into its perimeter at W. This is now an oval area (max. dims c. 80m E-W; c. 40-45m N-S) defined by masonry walls with the stone shrine (MO011-010004-) inside the perimeter at S, but at one time it may have been much larger and included the small graveyard around the Romanesque church c. 40m to the ENE. The burials (MO011-010-009-; MO011-010010-) recovered between the graveyards demonstrate this. The headstone inscriptions in both graveyards have been recorded (Mulligan and McMahon 1984, 421-32) and they date generally from c. 1725 in both to c. 1850 at the Romanesque church and to c. 1900 in the main graveyard.
