On Illaunmore Island, a small sandstone block marked a church before men forgot the name of the island. Someone cut a cross whose lines ran to every edge, slightly askew as if haste or pride shaped the tool. That stone left the drowned church and entered Clare Museum, carrying a room no longer visible.

On display in Clare Museum, Ennis. A small irregularly shaped sandstone block (H 0.27m; Wth 0.2m; T 0.05m) with a plain incised cross continuing right to the edges of the stone. The horizontal line of the cross is not quite at right angles to the vertical line. Originally from within the remains of a church (CL021a005001-) on Illaunmore Island in Lough Derg (Gleeson 1955, 57). See original location record (CL021a005006-). CL033-189----_01.jpg attached. A small cross-slab, likely dating to the early medieval period (5th–11th century), possibly used as a Christian memorial or waymarker. The incomplete horizontal line of the cross suggests regional variation in cross design or potential damage over time.
