Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00492 Dimensions: H 0.125, W 0.185, T 0.04 The arm of an outline (?) cross with stepped terminal. No inscription. Evidence of discovery: Davis 1984. Condition: A very worn fragment with part of arm of cross.. The Clonmacnoise inventory was compiled by the Office of Public Works. Date likely to the early Christian period (5th–9th century AD), based on the cross form and context of Clonmacnoise as an important monastic site. The stepped terminal may reflect a regional variation in cross design, possibly associated with ritual or funerary use.
