Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00350 Dimensions: H 0.543, W 0.429, T 0.10 An outline expansional cross with median line. The looped lateral terminals contain fret pattern while there is interlace in the upper arm terminal. The central expansion has an unusual spiral fret pattern. Inscription: Vertical inscription 'OR DO [MAEL] BRIGTE'. Evidence of discovery: Rubbing by Graves in 1869. Condition: Badly weathered; detached fragment not with slab. Date likely to the 8th to 10th century AD, consistent with early Christian insular art. The cross and interlace may signify a Christian memorial or ecclesiastical marker, reflecting the spiritual significance of Clonmacnoise as a monastic site.
