Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00215 Dimensions: H 0.68, W 0.38 - 0.26, T 0.03 A double outline ring cross with hollow angles. The lines of the cross form the inner and outer lines of the two line trapezoid frame. The centre is lozenge shaped and has roundels in the angles. Inscription: Below the frame is the inscription 'EUAUR' Evidence of discovery: OPW 1954-58 Condition: Complete but very worn. Some damage to frame. Date likely to the 9th–10th century AD, consistent with high crosses of the early Christian period in Ireland. The ring cross may have had a liturgical or commemorative function, reflecting Christian symbolism and possibly associated with the monastic settlement of Clonmacnoise.
