Enclosure

Why this matters

A local fairy fort (ringfort/rath); wider significance not recorded.

What is recorded here

In pasture, at the break of a N-facing slope at the foot of the Ox Mountains. A D-shaped area (dims. 7.6m E-W) defined on the straight W side (L 19m N-S) by a sunken trackway (Wth c. 6m), flanked on its W side by a field boundary. Along the N-S arc the interior is defined by a steep natural slope. At E the top of the natural slope has been scarped (H 2.6m) and at the base of the scarp is a terrace (Wth 1.8m) from which the ground falls away steeply for several metres. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005).
