Beverston Castle is a ruined medieval fortress and living estate in the Cotswolds, built in 1229 by Maurice de Gaunt and later strengthened with a quadrangular stronghold and twin-towered gatehouse. Its pentagonal plan, limestone walls and scattered cottages still mark a place where old defence became domestic life. The name may derive from blue stones, and the land may remember earlier Roman and Iron Age presence, but the castle itself belongs to the age of barons, licences and quiet occupation.
