Castle Gotha is a small oval defended settlement on a north-east facing hillslope above St Austell Bay, occupied from the Bronze Age through the Romano-British period. Its sharply cut ditch, stone-revetted bank and inner huts show a place where people lived, worked metal and changed the shape of the ground as needs changed. The oval stone-walled hut with ash-filled pits and a tin pebble on its floor suggests furnaces, experiment and risk, while the later causeway and hedge-like bank suggest adaptation rather than grand design.
