Trematon Castle stands as a ruined Norman shell keep near Saltash, built soon after the Conquest on the remains of an earlier Cornish stronghold. Its oval stone walls are ten feet thick and rise thirty feet high above the Lynher River, marking it as the capital of a powerful feudal barony. A Georgian house later occupied the courtyard, forcing the demolition of part of the ancient wall merely to secure a better view for its residents. The castle still holds its shape against time, preserving the bold military architecture of Robert, Count of Mortain, while losing pieces of itself to human vanity.
