Castle Hill in Mere, Wiltshire, was a six-towered stone fortress built by Richard, the Earl of Cornwall, in 1253. Men scarped the chalk ridge and cut a deep ditch before raising gates, chambers and a chapel above the small village. The castle passed through several hands, lost its roofs and stone, and became an empty hill. It still stands as a scheduled monument, marked by a flagpole and a wartime memorial.
