Bridge

What is recorded here

Listed in both the SMR (1989) and the RMP (1995) and classified 'Bridge'. A partially collapsed road bridge (on a ENE-WSW axis; Wth 7.5m), of 18th-century appearance, over the Owenbeg River to NE of Coolaney village. The remains of two tall semicircular arches (span c. 8m; H 6-7m), with a third collapsed dry arch (span 3.7m; H 1.8m) on the floodplain c. 20m to SW, under a disused approach road from Coolaney. All of the arches have rough voussoirs. The bridge has tall piers (Wth c. 2m) with low pointed cutwaters; there are also cutwaters against the side walls of the road to ENE. The bridge is now overgrown with ash trees, the roots of which are causing severe structural damage. It was replaced by another bridge to SW, closer to Coolaney. The later bridge, dated 1833, is slightly hump-backed and has a single wide segmental arch with a prominent keystone and cutstone voussoirs and string course. This bridge probably dates to the post-1700 AD period. Compiled by: Archaeological Survey Unit, UCC Date of upload: 11 January 2012
