What is recorded here

Lewis (1837, vol. 2, 329) described stone 'on the lands of Codrum....of clay-slate inserted into a wall on the roadside, with the following inscription still legible: D.E.O.C. 1686. H.F. Fecit., implying that Donald, Earl of Clancarty, caused it to be erected'. According to local information, stone buried c. 1989 when wall was demolished; area now gateway into new house. Appeared to have occupied roughly the same locationas stone named 'St Gobnet's Stone' (CO070-125----) on 1842 OS 6-inch map. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
