What is recorded here

Situated at the crest of a N-facing slope overlooking Lough Errew. It is represented only on the 1907 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described as a ‘Cromlech’. Two large stones, one prone (dims c. 2.3m x v. 2.5m; T 0.2-0.4m) but supported on a few small boulders and the other upright (dims c. 2m x c. 0.3m; H c. 2.5m), might be an ornamental feature associated with the nearby mansion of Lough Rinn House (LE036-006---). Archaeological monitoring (03E1761) of a new road c. 80m to the SW at its closest point produced no related material (Read 2009). (de Valera and Ó Nualláin 1972, 86) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 23 September 2008 Amended: 7 January 2020
